The peaceful town of Newbern, Tennessee is home to about 3,000 residents. Only a short nine miles away from Dyersburg, Newbern is a perfect combination of small-town country living and the conveniences of a larger metropolitan area.

Newbern History

Unlike much of the state, the western portion of Tennessee was settled long after American won its independence and Tennessee its statehood. In 1818, the Chickasaw Indians ceded their traditional hunting land in a treaty that the Chickasaw chiefs signed with Andrew Jackson and Isaac Shelby.

After this territory was acquired, immigration followed. Droves of settlers crossed the Tennessee River to take advantage of this new land. In 1823, Tennessee’s General Assembly established the county in which Newbern would form, Dyer County.

Settlement began in the area on a ridge between the Obion and Forked Deer Rivers. In 1850, Owen Philyou of North Carolina built a log cabin in the area now known as Newbern. He named his settlement after the town he was from in North Carolina, “New Bern.” New Bern was named after the town of Bern, Switzerland. The name eventually became compounded, thus creating the name of today’s town, “Newbern.”
