Dyersburg History

The area that would become Dyersburg was originally occupied by the Chickasaw Indians. As American interests expanded westward, seizure of Indian lands was inevitable. The Chickasaw signed a treaty with Andrew Jackson and Isaac Shelby, Governor of Kentucky, ceding their hunting ground in West Tennessee. Immigrants began to steadily stream into the newly acquired territory from Virginia and North and South Carolina.
Dyer County was established in 1803, and named in honor of Col. Robert H. Dyer, one of the heroes of the Battle of New Orleans under the command of General Andrew Jackson. Dyer eventually settled in the area that would bear his name, Dyer himself was the county’s first Postmaster and served on the first County Court.

The Town of Dyersburg made from land known as McIver’s Bluff, a land grand from the State of Tennessee. The town was originally made up of 60 acres of the original 640-acre grant. Dyersburg was officially incorporated in 1850.
Dyersburg quickly grew as a river town. Steamboat travel along the Forked Deer River made Dyersburg a natural hub of commerce. The first industrial boom in Dyer County occurred in 1879 when steamboats began shipping timber from Dyersburg to St. Louis to feed that city’s construction growth.
